Portable Fire Extinguishers: Maintenance, Use, Placement and Testing
Almost all fires are small in their incipient stage and can be put out quickly if the proper firefighting equipment is available and the person discovering the fire has been trained to use the equipment at hand. Most facilities turn to portable fire extinguishers for fighting incipient stage fires. The requirements for portable fire extinguishers in general industry are governed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and are located in 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.157.
To be effective, according to OSHA, portable fire extinguishers must be:
- Of the proper type for the class of fire expected
- Located where they are readily accessible for immediate use and in sufficient quantity and size to deal with the expected fire
- Inspected and maintained on a regular basis by an approved servicing station so that they are kept in good operating condition
- Operated by trained personnel who can use them effectively
Workshop Facility.
Seafloat has a state of the art international standard fire extinguishers servicing station equipped with standard equipment for maintenance and servicing of the extinguishers. Some of the equipments that facilitates our services includes:
CO2 Refilling plant:
This equipment that compresses the gaseous CO2 agent from a source to thean extinguishing cylinder irrespective of the size. This equipment incorporates a manometer guage for such that when the required weight of the CO2 is reached, it will automatically shut down the system This guage also ensures precision on the refilled weight of CO2 inside the cylinder. With this equipment we are able to refill all sizes of CO2 extinguisher cylinders including the fixed systems. It can refill/compress CO2 into small catriges of 33gr to 45kg cylinders
Powder Recharger:
DCP powder extinguishers require anuall maintenance and re-certification to ensure the integrity of the ammonia fire fighting agent . The power recharger helps to disintegrate the powder substance and reactivates the ammonia in the powder.
Hydrotesting Equipment:
At certain intervals, fire extinguishers are required to be pressure tested using water or some other noncompressible fluid to help prevent unwanted failure or rupture of the cylinder [see NFPA 10(98), Chapter 5]. This is called hydrostatic testing and includes both an internal and external examination of the cylinder. Because this testing requires special training and equipment, it needs to be performed by an approved extinguisher servicing company. This need for hydrotesting is because CO2 is a gas compressed in a cylinder, it always exerts a certain amount of pressure on the walls of the containing cylinder. Hence regulation requires that such pressure holding cylinders must be hydrotested every 5years to ensure the integrity of the cylinder to avoid the harzards that may occur during pressurising if the cylinder is weak. With the aid of the Cylinder hydrotesting equipment, Seafloat is able to carry out all hydrotesting needs of our client. Be it fire extinguisher bottles, Nitrogen Bottles, Medical Air bottles, Compressed Air bottles, SCBA bottles, EEBD bottles, etc.
Seafloat services and sells all types of fire extinguishers ranging from foam chemical, DCP, CO2, and Water portable fire extinguisher of 1kg to 9kg. We also service wheeled types extinguisher from 10kg to 200kg regardless of the type. Our range of services has also grown to the stage where we can now confidently manage integrated service contracts covering the maintenance of a whole range of safety and fire fighting equipment such as life jackets, breathing apparatus, gas detectors, and fire extinguishers. This type of contract includes the provision of permanent offshore Safety Technicians as well as visiting service engineers.
FM-200 SYSTEMS
Those responsible for managing and protecting high-value assets, processes, and facilities
demand the quality fire suppression offered by the ANSUL® FM-200™ Clean Agent Fire
Suppression System. FM-200 systems are internationally accepted as providing reliable,
effective, affordable fire protection solutions for applications found in telecommunication
sites, data centers and archives, museums, oil and gas facilities, power plants, and more.
The ANSUL FM-200 Clean Agent Fire Suppression System is approved by Factory Mutual (FM) and listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for Class A, B and C fires. Safe for use in occupied areas at the design concentration, the system helps protect critical infrastructure and delivers effective asset protection.
The system uses FM-200 (HFC-227ea) fire extinguishing which has zero ozone depletion (ODP). This colorless, odorless agent vaporizes upon discharge and absorbs heat to rapidly suppress fire while leaving no residue to clean up. It is electrically nonconductive, will not short-out electronic equipment or thermally shock delicate circuitry resulting in less damage to critical equipment, facilitating a much shorter recovery time and reducing downtime.
FM 200 Waterless Fire Protections:
A Gaseous Fire Fighting System for Marine Applications. We suggest you the innovative FM-200 Waterless Fire Protection Systems which is people-safe, fast-acting, space-efficient, and collateral damage reducing.
How FM-200 Waterless Fire Protection System works?
FM-200 is specially designed for marine fire fighting and is distributed uniformly throughout the protected area of a vessel, such as the engine enclosures, electrical controls, machinery compartments, and other marine applications. Water or water mist may not penetrate inside cabinets or reach a fire that is underneath machinery compartments, whereas the FM-200 gas can penetrate easily into obscure or hard to reach areas with its 3- D capability.

Applications
FM 200 Waterless Fire Protection is the most effective marine fire fighting system which is used on numerous marine applications including:
- Engine compartments
- Electronic controls
- Electrical equipment
- Generator compartments
- Communication centres
- Flammable liquid storage areas
- Cargo spaces
- To replace existing Halon 1301 systems
- Can be used in place of CO2
- In all occupied spaces.
